This is going to be a challenging one to write. Mainly because I’m certain almost no one has heard of this game. My hope, is that by reading this, you may feel an urge to give the game a go, so I certainly don’t want to spoil anything for you while I write it.
Breakdown was one of those games I only know about by chance. My sister mentioned it to me when her friend had been playing it or had played it before. He said it was really hard, but a fun game. Now, this was quite some time ago obviously, and I was able to pick this game up fairly cheap at game stop, so I gave it a go.
If you are willing to forgive some of the technical problems, like touch controls, or somewhat strange movements, this game is a real gem. As mentioned almost no one I know has heard of this game. The story revolves around Derek Cole, who is pictured above. Now its been a while since I’ve played the game, so my exact details on the plot are a bit hazy. But the gist of it is that you are a soldier who has powers of an alien race that appeared on the world.
I can’t say I remember how you get them, or every characters plot points perfectly. However, I can say the games mechanics had a little of something for everyone. It was first person, and included fighting, shooting guns, driving, and pretty sizable worlds to roam. Although its linear, the story is very solid. In fact, I’d go as far as to say its one of my favorite stories in a game ever.
Now the game is old, so the graphics feel dated, but I was very impressed when I first got my hands on it. The music was fantastic. It really kept you engaged as you fought or explored the worlds. The voicework was very good for the time period, and I think would still hold up well to this day. I played this a very long time to finally beat the game. It was very challenging for me, and I died a lot. The reward when I beat each level was worth it though.
Now I know the quality won’t be the greatest, but this game had two trailers that will help you understand some of this more than I can describe. I know the quality isn’t the greatest. This trailer was shown at e3 way back in the day, and was unlockable upon beating the game. I hope you enjoy.
